Health Insurance Scheme For Kerala Government Staffs and Pensioners - Kerala

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Following the recommendation of the tenth pay commission, the state cabinet has decided to implement a health insurance scheme for government employees and pensioners.

It was also decided to continue the present medical reimbursement scheme.

As part of the new scheme, Rs 300 will be deducted from salary of government employees towards the premium for the insurance scheme.

At present, pensioners are provided Rs 300 per month as medical allowance, which will be ceased and the amount will be converted into premium for the scheme. The government has decided to invite application from companies, giving priority for insurance companies in the public sector, to implement the scheme.

Also, with the implementation of the insurance scheme, the government will put an end to the interest-free medical loan given to government employees. Currently, the government spends around Rs 230 crore for medical reimbursement, medical allowance for pensioners and interest-free medical loan.

Under the scheme, government employees and pensioners can avail cashless treatment from select hospitals. The scheme also envisages to provide insurance cover for outpatients also.

Other cabinet decisions The cabinet has also decided to implement a special package for the development of Edamalakkudy, the only tribal grama panchayat in the state.

As part of the programme, the grama panchayat office will be immediately shifted to Edamalakkudy. A new health centre will be set up and the lower primary school will be upgraded to upper primary school.

A new residential school, drinking water power supply schemes among other projects have been planned under this package.

The cabinet also decided to create 120 new posts in the state public service commission. Aroor in Allappuzha and Koyilandi in Kozhikode will get new fire and rescue stations for which 21 new posts will be created.

Retired additional chief secretary Sheila Thomas has been appointed as the new member secretary of administrative reforms commission.
